Guide to Easy A modules in NUS
Going into my final year i was thinking what would be a nice parting gift to my freshmen and sophomore juniors. So here it is, a rough guide to what I think (along with friends of mine) are the “easy A” modules or modules that are of interests.
This guide will constantly be updated as the CORs bidding round progresses (or as my time permits, check back every sem for new updates)
*Disclaimer*
There is no guarantee you WILL get A, you still have to study and put in some level of effort. Also these are based on the opinions of this particular senior and several others, it can be subjective. Also check the availability of modules some are only offered in even or odd sems only.
Ok onwards with the modules!
GEMS
GEK 1519: Science of Music
Its no examinable, that is already a plus point. Great for people with musical background as the final project is creating your own composition. According to a mechanical engineering friend, those who completed year 2 will find this module rather easy as there are various theories on frequency that you already completed. Again, according to this senior there are 2 parts to the course 1) the science.. which is basic physics and a level math 2)the music part is just memory work. Mid terms are all MCQ.
Rating: 3.5/5 Only for those who have musical background or will definitely SU it. But non examinable is definitely a Plus.
GEK 1006: Dynamics of Interpersonal Effectiveness
Not really an easy A, but this is a really fun module to take. The tutorials is once every 2 weeks and you spend your time talking to others, sort of like speed dating sometimes. Great place to meet and know people and if you are the shy kind, practice breaking out of your shyness. On the whole, its fun, but I would SU it unless you are good at writing essays which is the final exam
Rating 3/5: Just fun
GEK1532 Colour & Vision (SEM 2 only)
2 parts to this, first part is simple physics as well as some basic colour knowledge. Harder part is later on when there is more bio and DNA stuff. But good thing is that the exam paper does not change alot. Those who actually bother to do the past year paper will find it advantages.
Rating: 4/5 Easy to prepare for exam as qns differ only slightly from past year
GEK1527 Genes & Society
This is more for Chemical engineering/ environmental engineering students or those who have taking a biochem related module such as LSM 1401 before (as your core). According to my friend who took it, the syllabus is rather light and most of it has already been covered before in your LSM module.
Rating: 3/5: Advantage is only restricted to those who have taken LSM1401 (which can be a good thing or bad thing depending on which side you are on.
GEK 1520 Understanding the Universe
None examinable, mainly focusing on CAs and projects, somehow guys like this module alot.
Update:
From Chillycraps (via comments)
i have input for Understanding the Universe! (how come cannot comment in the guide?)
that mod doesn’t need much time, only bi-weekly in class assignment and the pair work term paper. Tests are MCQ, which means competition is stiff. Don’t take this if you want A but take this if you want to slack and don’t fail.
Rating: 3.5/5 (Updated based on Chillycraps input)
GEM2900 Understanding Uncertainty & Stats Thinking
According to the senior who recommended this, its damn easy for those who know statistics or done some kind of statistics course previously. Apparently it only goes up to Normal Distribution and focuses mainly on basics. So if you have some sort of background/knowledge why not?
Rating: 3/5 Seems rather basic especially if you learn this in JC before.
GEM2006 Logic
Great arts GEM for engineerin/science/computing students. I guess if you have some kind of programming background it helps since programming is all about logic too.
Rating: 2.5/5 (need more input for others)
Breadths
EC1301: Principle of Economics
Great for those with A level econs background. You can literally sleep through the microeconomics section. Macro econs differs a bit from the A level syllabus so you gotta pay attention. MCQ Finals and midterms.
Rating 4/5: Those with A level econs have a distinct advantage
EL1101E: Nature of Language
Pretty easy for a language breadth, you do not need fantastic english and it seems more suited for engineers/science students cos its more like “science” of language. Its asking you to identify rules in sentence structure, so easy to memorise. BUT depends on project too so get yourself a good group and you are set.
Rating: 2.5/5: You need a good project group.
FNA1002X: Financial Accounting
Did not take this as I took econs, but those who took it found it easy (engineers perspective). It is basic maths, add and subtract and simple logic. Quite a popular module among the engineers.
Rating: 2.5/5: Very competitive actually, so the A can be comprimised
IT1001 introduction to computing
Just need to do a website(with dreamweaver around… easy job) and exam is MCQ only. Problem… very competitive due to popularity
Rating 2.5/5: competitiveness = tough road. But if you do websites for fun why not?
UCV 2201 islam & contemporary muslim socs (USP module)
No exam, lots of field trips, main bulk goes into a term paper worth 60%. Recommended by a USP senior.
Rating 3/5: no exam + field trips (means fun)
Singapore Studies Modules
SSB2216: Employee Management In Singapore
According to my friend its easy…..he got A+ for it. But be warned, since its already well known to be easy its big points are known to SOAR. His advice is to talk alot in tutorials, participation is key.
Rating:3/5 (might be hard to bid on)
