Beer Making 101: Simple Extract Beer
By arzhou | June 23, 2008
Homebrewing is really a simple hobby as long as you stick to brewing with extracts. Its really just following the instructions on the manual. There are other more advance techniques or additional things you can do to improve/add value to the beer (but more on that next time)
There are basically x steps in brewing with extracts:
1) Prepare water, generally Singapore tap water is clean but i still like to boil it before use. Make sure you cool down to RTP (Room temperature). 20 Litres is no easy feat.
2) Boil another 3L of water in a pot this is for preparing the wort.
3) Warm up the can of extract in hot water, makes it easier to pour it.
4) Mix the extract with the water + any sugar + dry malt + hops + random stuff
5) Boil it all, then cool it down quickly to RTP if possible. I dunk it into a tub of ice water generally
6) Mix the wort with the rest of the water up to 23L and store.
This is all done in say 2 hours… except the initial preparation of water, but if you just use from the tap then its fast.
After that its about 1 week for fermentation, waiting for the specific gravity to stabilise (that means fermentation is done). After that the beer is transferred to bottles or kegs for further carbonation and aging.
