Arzhou @ Kinabalu - Part 2 - The summit
By arzhou | May 23, 2008
So after resting at Laban Rata for the night, we were supposed to go for the summit the next day. But in the early morning (2am) there was really strong winds blowing and most were having second thoughts as it seems the weather was going to get really bad. But I decided to try for the summit just see if it was possible ( I think i did regret my decision once while I was climbing).
It was really cold and windy as I started climbing up, even more so once we got past the jungle part of stairs and it was all rocks, rocks and more rocks (and the rope). It was quite tough considering it was dark, windy, my glasses were not clear cos of rain. It took some effort but I finally reached the summit gate, then I decided to turn back, partly cos both my knees were starting to hurt.
After a break + waiting for the all clear to descend I was able to head down back to Laban Rata in fairly good weather, so me and the guide, Ben, were both able to capture quite a lot of nice shots. I guess it was a good decision to turn back as the moment I reached back to Laban Rata, heavy rain started to pour down from the skies. Thank goodness I was not those stuck on the summit in the rain, at least I have hot tea and toast!

I was there many years ago with my school. We didn’t climb but took a bus up. Not sure if it’s the same mountain though but the lodging we stayed overnight in had hundreds of gigantic hairy moths!
