Arzhou @ Kinabalu - Part 1

By arzhou | May 20, 2008

Gotta start breaking out of this habit of making belated posts on my travels, the intertia is rather great sometimes cos of the amount of photos to sort through.

Kinabalu 1

Anyway after my exams I ended up taking a trip to scale Mt Kinabalu in Sabah. Sort of trained for it with weekly trips to Bukit Timah hill (should have done it more). The journey begins at the park HQ which was already pretty high up, from there we would be taken to either starting points (Mesilau or Timpohon)

The giant insect in the female toilet that made val scream. Yea I went in to take a photo (after checking it was empty first of course!)

Breakfast before the climb, good thing I did not puke anything out along the way

Me and my friends (Val and WX, pity Sip could not make it) chose to start our climb up Mt Kinabalu via the Mesilau Trail which was supposedly more scenic and challenging. And I guess after going that trail i would have to agree. Especially when you go all the way up only to see the trail head all the way down again. But the ridgeline views were really nice, although the winds were really strong so it got pretty chilly. It took about 8 hrs I think before i reached the midway point of Laban Rata which is where all the climbers will stay before making the summit attempt the next day. By the time I reached Laban Rata, my knees were already strained from all the climbing, guess i needed to get better knee guards next time. Its really amazing what they did at Raban Lata, with facilities (ie: electricty, water etc) and the fact they actually built an electric line will the way up to power the place.

Arriving at Laban Rata….

It was a pity that due to bad weather and bad knees i was unable to make it to the summit, but I did make it to the summit gate before turning back. More on this in part 2, uploading the photos is a chore.
