OMG….Singapore is NOT IN CHINA!!!
By arzhou | January 23, 2008
Amazing how this common misconception is so prevalent, even at the USA government level. I got a letter about tax rebates for 2007 from the Pennsylvania Tax Dept (I was working in Philadelphia under the NOC program for a year). My dad pointed it out to me and I was quite surprised, even at the civil service level they are making this error. AND I AM SURE I NEVER DECLARED SINGAPORE WAS FROM CHINA!!!
Oh wait…. i should, anyone from PRC gets 100% tax rebate from USA *hehehe*

haha!!! OMG!!! But the postal service was clever enough not to send it to China…
Anyway, I’ve heard that Singapore was part of Hawaii… Lol…

They should have a map of the world in all USA State Dept office. I am surprised it ended up in Singapore tho.

Hahah, omg… Why did they add China to a perfectly complete address?

Americans are retarded. I’m sure they can’t even point to their own country on the map.

I am quite sure, we on our side, can’t really tell which US state is where.
Me for 1, is quite clueless about states like Seattle, Virginia, Chicago etc.
Only know the big holiday states like NY, LA, Texas etc.
Once I got to know a Brazilian Friend on MSN. I got confused, and mentioned that Maradona comes from there.
Thus its quite the same over here, really.

Arzhou, here’s a funny video of a Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) journalist with an event pass which speaks for itself: http://tanaron.blogspot.com/2008/01/once-again-singapore-is-not-in-china.html

Lodestar: After Ms South Carolina’s performace at miss teen usa, I would have to agree :p
Eddie: I guess it comes with how much you travel or been around, having been in the states for a year, I roughly know where most of the states are located. Likewise, friends who spent time in Europe are quite familar with most European countries and cities, which I am not. Btw, LA is not a state, its a major city in the states of california.
I just kind of found it funny, since I always say singapore is part of china as a joke.

haha omg i’m so not surprised!
so many times when i’ve chatting with ppl from the US online, they will either ask me which part of China is Singapore in and if i know any kung fu?!?
lol!

Kudos to arzhou for pointing out that LA is not a state. America isn’t exactly a small country - it’s comparable to Europe in size. Not to say that Americans know the 50 states by heart, but a tiny country the size of Singapore isn’t really going to leave much of an impression on them.
To be fair to the Americans - how many of you can even tell Cambodia from Laos from Burma on a map, let alone European countries like Belarus from Bulgaria. Can anyone here confidently identify all the major Chinese states?

PUHlease… with the influx of PRC workers in the service/F&B industry, sometimes I think we’re part of China too.

yes, this is a known widespread misconception.
the one thing you can do to minimize the possibility of confusion is to write:
“Republic of Singapore”
at the end.

That’s not surprising at all. Most Americians can’t even name all the states in USA, despite every single Americian primary school have a large USA map in each cassroom.
Singaporean are equally clueless. If you look at comment #7, Eddie Hoon think that Seattle, Chicago and even LA are states in USA.
