My view on NuffNang’s Exclusive Offer

By arzhou | January 8, 2008

I am sure most bloggers who have done some form of monetization of their blog would have heard about Nuffnang’s latest “exclusive” offer. So well here is my views on it.

Simplyjean’s blogpost on it is another good read on this and the comments left by some fellow bloggers on that post are pretty objective and give a good rationale view. At least in my opinion.

As what I said in my comments at Jean’s blog, I think the benefits offered to become an “exclusive” member is not sufficient for me to simply ignore all other offerings given by other companies like blog2u or advertlets.

When it comes to exclusivity, as a blogger or publisher, I want confirmed cash, not the possibility of earning more. (for those who do not know, nuffnang does not serve ads 100% of the time, so there are times where you can get nothing) I have done sch bazaars, marketing, sponsorships before and when we talk about exclusivity, we want confirmed value. Unless Nuffnang tells me that for the exclusive rights, they will give me a confirmed $5 each month in addition to whatever i make when they serve ads, now that I will think about it. If not NO THANKS.

There is really no point in excluding other ad companies just for a POSSIBILITY you can earn more, its not even confirmed. I rather keep my options open and my revenue sources varied. Remeber earning 20-30% more of $0 is STILL $0.

Oh btw let me give you a more anedoctal example. I once made $1.40 from a week long Nuffnang ad campaign. So if I was an exclusive member I would have made 28 cents more. Now I make about 50 cents to 1 dollar a week from advertlets and $3-$6 a month from blog2u. So tell me if my exclusive 28cents is worth the not so exclusive money.

SO let me conclude by saying that if you have been getting ads from nuffnang on a regular basis and your earnings are decent, it makes sense to go exclusive. If you are those who have not seen an ad in over 2-3 weeks, it might make more sense to keep your options open.

That is what nuffnang wanted you to think. I’m sure they’re not stupid people. They knew beforehand what sort of response glitterati would trigger.

Now when they design this new model, they have a goal in mind. They knew no one would in the world would join their glitterati club unless you’re talking about celebrity bloggers? But celebrity bloggers by default are already exclusive in payments and treatment before glitterati.

So why this glitterati. To understand the motive behind the introduction of this model, we need to observe what is the catch for them. By glancing through the letter Ming wrote. I can safely say……they did not wanted everyone to get on their exclusive list. Why? If they are sincere, surely they can come up with something better? I mean something that attracts? Not deviate right? I mean does this glitterati attracts or deviate? You know and i know.

Now why do they wanted bloggers to run away from this glitterati? To understand this bit, lets compare the difference between glitterati and a non-glitterati. By glancing through Ming’s letter, one can safely say that Glitterati and non-Glitterati are just in name. The main difference lies in the treatment from them in 2 key points – Payment and Benefits.

Now we all know from past incident that the team has some problems with regards to doing their financial equation. I mean they wanted to make money from issuing a cheque and of course they pass operating cost to others as and when they like it. And of course the famous one liner -we-pay-you-first-before-we-got-paid- kind of ego boosting comments.

Further to the fact, they have bloggers crying foul about “earning too little”. I mean have you ever come across a post about google adsense earnings too little? No, why? Because it is and must be commensurate to your traffic. So the adverts are thrown to you and you just need to maintain your traffic – the earnings are in your hand. But with nuffnang, no. The earnings can be so dubious that it can fluctuates between so wide figures that they had found a very interesting formulae to calculate your earnings – Your calculations are relevant to the past week’s traffic, not that current week you were served ads. Can you now see how dubious their financial calculations are?

I can safely say they are making so much in the last few months that they could afford several imac for each and every staff, and they could continue to treat their staff to lunch(read their blog), and he would bring staff to shop for books at MPH(all paid for by the company’s account)

The made the money by “cheating” bloggers and advertisers.

From this, we can tell their financial calculations are not very stable. It is not a surprise to see them coming up with glitterati to further supply their income by delaying payments. Because now profits to them has a new meaning. It mean that if they can delay payouts to bloggers, they can make more money. They have finally understood the meaning of cash flow.

This glitterati is mean to increase their cash flow which of course then technically means their profit increases.

We know this is a very short-sighted view of a business but these 2 who had never worked a single day in their life are crooks by nature since if they could put their own ads and upgrade themself to glitterati in their own blogs, what else they cant do?

I come from a different perspective.

To me it’s not a money issue (it’s not).

It’s just that I simply refuse to have someone else tell me what I can or cannot do with my blog.

I’ve only signed on to bak2u.sg so far, but based on what’s happening right now, nuffnang can forget about seeing me in their ranks ever.

    My 2 cents.

Harry: I am not so sure about that full conspiracy but as you can see I barely carry any ads now. (My blog2u ads just finished their run *hint paddy*) So I guess I am not affected by any plans for them to delay payment or anything.

Daniel: I agree, bloggers have the right to choose what they can blog about and what they put up on their blogs.
