Battlestations! – Explaining the new XP changes
By arzhou | November 7, 2007
Some of you might know while some might not, but I am pretty much an avid fan of the facebook game Battlestations developed by the local company Tyler Games. Yes for those who are in ping.sg and have been hearing me talk about Ping Pirates, this is exactly the game I was talking about.
I will explain more about Battlestations in later posts.
Anyway more on the xp(Experience points) changes issue that sort of shocked many players of the game who logged in only to find the next level seems really far away when previously all it too was 2-3 attacks to get sufficient xp.
Leonard from Tyler was kind enough so send me some charts showing the xp progression. I will try my best to intepret what these graphs mean. (Note that this is really a neutral opinion, Leonard did not pay me or give me 1 million APs or this ultra rare ram… I wish he did =p )
It is good to see that the developers of the game are being transparent about their changes and are engaging their user base.
Overall Chart Level 1 to 100:
Ok in the old system, the xp gain was essentially exponential, that means its really really easy initially, then suddenly everyone hits this crazy xp wall which is really high. The new system is more linear in nature (I will not call it linear but its close to it). Hence to reach level 100 it is much simpler in the new system that Tyler implemented.
BUT why is there a sudden change in the xp gap?
Chart of Level 1 to 50
Now notice what happens when we check out the progression of 1 – 50. In the new system those from about lvl 23 onward will have a higher xp bar to climb. But if you take a look, at lvl 50 you will notice that the xp needed to reach lvl 50 is almost similar for both systems. Just that for those in the lvl 35 onwards you will see a significant difference in your xp required for the next level. But eventually the xp required to reach level 50 is more or less the same. In fact the data points are actually evenly spaced out in the new system then exponentially spaced.
So why are so many players seeing such a drastic gap? Well due to this change, many players (Me included) are actually of a lower level then what we currently are, if you use the new charts. While I am a lvl 44, if I check my xp against this chart, under the new system I am actually about level 41. That means I got 3 levels for free, so right now while I am trying to get to level 45, I am essentially levelling from lvl 41 to 45. Think of it as you are getting an advance in your stats and level and now you are making up for it.
Conclusion:
Even with the new system, it will still take about the same amount of xp to reach level 50. I hope this clears up the entire issue on how xp is calculated in Battlestations.

I just realised, if the graphs show the XP required before levelling up…that means under the new system, the cumulative XP to get to level 50 is higher…dang. I should have levelled up faster before the change…heh
