Blog Action Day – Things Bloggers can do for the Environment

By arzhou | October 15, 2007

Well today is blog action day and the theme this year is the Environment. So I was thinking what should I write about for today. So I thought why not have a simple list of everyday things we can do just to help with the environment. I mean if everyone (not just bloggers or environmentalist) do just a little bit, I am sure things will add up. This list can be used by anyone although I think some of the points might be more skewed to bloggers.

  1. Totally power down your computer + modem + router when not in use. I think this is a trait of many bloggers who happen to be heavy users of the computers, often we just leave the entire desktop/laptop running even though we are not around. Even if we go into standby mode, power is still being drawn, not to forget your modem and router.
  2. Try to cut down on personal wastage like not “ta baoing” to reduce the use of plastic containers (No I did not mean failing your uni exams which is another definition)
  3. Sometimes we can also blog about environmental issues and disasters, while this has no “physical” benefits, the thing is that you are helping to spread the news around. Sometimes just giving your 2 “virtual” cents counts.
  4. Also there are several things you can do with your aircon. After reading this post by Dr. Geh Min of the Nature Society, I thought I would post some tips on maximising your aircon while minimising energy from a chemical engineering standpoint (hey its all about heat transfer!)
    • When you air-condition a room, close all windows(to prevent cold air from escaping) and draw the curtains or the shades. This prevents radiation from the outside atmosphere which can warm up the room especially if it is a really hot day. Make sure the lights in your room are those energy saving ones!
    • Make sure the room is well sealed, minimise ways cold air can escape.
    • Have your air-con set to about 25 degrees . No point going lower, especially if you applied the above 2 tips. It should be comfortable enough. Why bother setting the air-con so cold only to wear a jacket.
    • Actually a fan would work just as well on those moderately hot days (not scorching hot, so why bother.

ok…. that is about it for me, pardon me if the points do not make sense, I am severely lacking sleep only had 7 hrs in the past 2 days. Peace out. *yes I will be adding to this list as things randomly pop in my head*
